A Study of David’s Preparation for Kingship in 1-2 Samuel: Season of Lent
Stories define life, from our earliest days when we drifted off to sleep to the
words “Once upon a time,” to our final breath, which is often surrounded by conversations that begin with “Do you remember when…” We are story-
shaped people. Perhaps that is why the account of the life of David has enthralled so many; because, as one has put it, his is a story of “becoming human.” Through the ages people have had a sense that more is going on in this tale than just a shepherd-boy becoming king. We cannot help realizing that God reveals himself and what it means to be human in the earthy and honest saga of David’s rise to kingship. This particular series will focus on part one of the story—where David spends fifteen years between the moment God anoints him as king and the time he actually reigns over all of God’s people. It is a season where David, and anyone else who would listen to his story, is invited to learn that God often reveals himself undercover, behind the scenes of everyday life. Only when we learn to trust God’s heart when we cannot see his hand do we really understand what it means to be human.
